UPDATE: (3:35 p.m.) The 49ers announced Eric Reid did in fact sustain a concussion.
SAN FRANCISCO -- Rookie safety Eric Reid sustained an apparent concussion in the third quarter Saturday against the Carolina Panthers and went to the locker room for further evaluation.
Reid sustained a concussion earlier this season against the Seattle Seahawks. He passed the NFL's protocol on concussions and returned the following week to play against the Indianapolis Colts.
Reid sustained the injury on a big collision against Panthers running back Mike Tolbert.
He remained on the ground while the team's medical staff and coach Jim Harbaugh gathered around him. After a couple of minutes, Reid got to his feet and walked off the field under his own power.
