The 49ers are reportedly trying to trade seldom-used running back LaMichael James.

Shortly after a Sacramento Bee report surfaced Wednesday that the 49ers are actively shopping James, he wrote on Twitter, “When old news become new news.”

James also re-Tweeted supportive messages that included references to hoping the 49ers would use his talents and how he needs a "fresh start."

A source told CSNBayArea.com that James, who has grown frustrated with his role with the 49ers, would welcome a trade. But there is no indication that the 49ers are actively trying to trade James.

James, a second-round pick in the 2012 draft, did not win his way onto the 46-man roster for games until the 49ers released punt returner Kyle Williams last season.

In just 14 regular-season games over two seasons, James has 184 yards rushing on 39 carries. He averaged 10.9 yards on 23 punt returns after taking over for Williams.

General manager Trent Baalke said in February at the NFL Scouting Combine that the 49ers would not trade James.

When asked if there has been any talk about trading James, Baalke answered, “No discussions. LaMichael is a 49er. He’ll continue to be a 49er.

Frank Gore, Marcus Lattimore and Kendall Hunter figure to rank ahead of James on the 49ers' depth chart this season. Moreover, the 49ers have shown interest in some draft-eligible prospects. Storm Johnson of Central Florida visited this week, and Terrance West of Towson is scheduled to visit on Monday.
