Shortly after signing veteran defensive end Justin Smith to a two-year extension, the 49ers announced that offensive coordinator Greg Roman has also signed an extension for two years.
Alongside Jim Harbaugh, Roman helped coach the 49ers to appearances in the NFC Championship Game in 2011 and the Super Bowl in 2012. Roman also managed the transition from Alex Smith to Colin Kaepernick at quarterback last season.
Roman and Harbaugh were hired by the 49ers prior to the 2011 season after coaching together at Stanford for two years. He began his professional coaching career as an assistant coach with the Carolina Panthers in 1995.
By signing a contract extension, Roman has committed to returning to the 49ers sideline for the 2013 season. He can, however, opt to leave the team after that.
Roman's continued success with the 49ers could put him among the candidates for a head coaching position next offseason.
