The 49ers will reportedly have some competition to retain free-agent safety Donte Whitner.

Whitner is on the New York Jets’ list of free-agent targets, the New York Daily News reported on Sunday. Whitner, cornerback Tarell Brown and kicker Phil Dawson are the 49ers’ top free agents.

Whitner, an eight-year NFL veteran, was the 49ers’ fourth-leading tackler last season. He also intercepted two passes. Whitner has missed just one start in three seasons after signing with the 49ers in 2011.

Teams may talk to representatives of scheduled free agents for a three-day period, but there can be no agreement to terms or contract signed until the free-agent signing period begins Tuesday at 1 p.m. (PT).
