Atlanta Falcons assistant Bobby Turner, a long-time fixture on Mike Shanahan's offensive staffs, will reportedly be coming to the 49ers as Kyle Shanahan's running backs coach.

With the hiring of Steve Sarkisian as Falcons offensive coordinator to replace Kyle Shanahan, the Atlanta organization is allowing Turner to leave for a spot with the 49ers, Gil Brandt of NFL.com reported.

Sources told CSNBayArea.com in recent days that Shanahan would attempt to hire Turner but the 49ers still wanted to retain Tom Rathman as a staff member in an unspecified role. It is believed Shanahan, general manager John Lynch and Rathman have yet to meet to discuss the options.

Rathman has been the 49ers’ running backs coach since 2009 under Mike Singletary, Jim Harbaugh, Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly. He also served as a 49ers assistant coach from 1997 to ’02 under Steve Mariucci.

Turner spent 15 seasons on Mike Shanahan’s staff with the Denver Broncos. Kyle Shanahan’s design for the run game run game is based on what his father did with the Broncos’ zone scheme.

“It’s similar, but every coach and every person has his own stamp,” Turner told CSNBayArea.com last week at the Super Bowl. “The bottom line, everyone says it’s the zone principle. But what is the zone? There’s outside zone, inside zone. There’s a stretch. You can have different coaches who work together have different philosophies. Overall, yeah, it’s the same, but Kyle has his own stamp.”

Shanahan is also set to hire Wagner offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello as quarterbacks coach, as USA Today first reported. Falcons offensive assistants Mike McDaniel and Mike LaFleur also appear ticketed to join the 49ers. Shanahan is expected to run the 49ers’ offense.

Scangarello served as Falcons quality control assistant in 2015 before taking over as Wagner’s offensive coordinator last year. He spent three seasons as Northern Arizona’s offensive coordinator. Scangarello, a native of Roseville and 1996 graduate of Sacramento State, also coached at UC Davis and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.

Shanahan has also reportedly hired former Colorado head coach Jon Embree to join his staff with the 49ers. Embree will serve as tight ends/assistant head coach, according to Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio and The Sporting News.

Embree worked with Shanahan in 2010 with Washington before compiling a 4-21 record in two seasons at Colorado. Embree returned to the NFL with Cleveland in 2013 and Tampa Bay from 2014 to ’16.
