Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, the main antagonist in the heated rivalry with the 49ers, will be around in the NFC West for a while.

“I am blessed to announce that the Seattle Seahawks and I have reached an agreement on a contract extension,” wrote Sherman, who played college ball at Stanford under coach Jim Harbaugh.

“The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks. With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important – defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL.”

The Seahawks signed safety Earl Thomas to a four-year, $40 million extension through the 2018 season on April 29.
