The 49ers on Tuesday signed free-agent running back Travaris Cadet, a source confirmed.

Cadet, 26, is a four-year NFL veteran who appeared in one game with the New England Patriots earlier this season. Cadet had one reception for two yards. The Patriots released Cadet on Sept. 29.

Cadet appeared in 41 games the past three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He has been used more as a receiver out of the backfield than a runner in his career. Cadet has 46 career receptions for 347 yards and two touchdowns. He has 10 career rushing attempts for 37 yards.

Cadet has also been used as a core special-teams player, including on kickoff returns. He has averaged 25.9 yards on 50 career returns.

The 49ers must make a corresponding roster move to make room for Cadet on the roster.

Currently, the 49ers have four other running backs on their 53-man roster, including Carlos Hyde, who has missed the past two games with a stress fracture (fifth metatarsal) in his left foot.

Kendall Gaskins, Shaun Draughn and Pierre Thomas were active for the 49ers’ 17-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
