Takeo Spikes: ‘I worry about my 49ers'

Takeo Spikes spent three of the last five NFL seasons of his 15-year career with the San Francisco 49ers, but he isn't too hot on his former team after the first few days of free agency.

"I worry about my 49ers," Spikes said on 95.7 The Game Friday afternoon. "The 49ers used to be the only team in the Bay. But now, it seems to me, the momentum has shifted, last year, to the Oakland Raiders."

The 49ers entered free agency with approximately $50 million in salary cap room. They signed quarterback Thad Lewis to a one-year deal on Thursday, but have otherwise been silent.

The lack of action is raising questions for Spikes.

"At this point, I think it's fair to say that the 49ers have gotten worse because they haven't done anything," Spikes said. "You look at free agency and you know they had money to spend on free agency. It makes me wonder why guys are not taking the bait. You have to ask yourself the question: Is it Chip Kelly? Is it the history of what he had in Philly? Is it the way he treated the players? Because players talk."

Spikes acknowledged that he was not very excited about the hiring of Kelly, but he liked the move from the perspective of maximizing the talents of quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Still, though, Spikes is seeing red flags.

"But when Colin does not want to be in the building, that's scary," Spikes said. "As a player, You want to go where a quarterback wants to be at. And if you know he's the franchise guy, and he does not want to be there after management has come out and said, 'We have no intentions on trading him,' but Colin is still saying, 'I don't want to be here,' that throws up a red flag."

Spikes, 39, spent three seasons with the 49ers from 2008 to 2010, playing in all but one game and totaling 200 tackles, six interceptions, five sacks, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
