Third quarter: Panthers own worst enemies

Third quarter: Broncos 16, Panthers 7

Analysis: Every time it looked as if the Carolina Panthers were on the verge of getting something going on offense, the Broncos’ defense proved to be just a little better, a little more opportunistic. In many ways, the Panthers were their own worst enemy between Jerricho Cotchery’s dropped pass, Graham Gano’s missed field goal, and Cam Newton’s interception. The Broncos thwarted Carolina’s final chance of the third quarter when Derek Wolfe and Von Miller shared a sack on a third-and-8 play from the Panthers’ 32-yard line. The Panthers, who have lost just one game this season, were absolutely stymied through three quarters.

Key play: The Panthers were looking to build some momentum after falling behind by nine points. Newton hit Corey Brown on a 42-yard pass. After moving the Denver 28, T.J. Ward intercepted Newton pass intended for Ginn at the 10-yard line. Ward fumbled, but Danny Trevathan recovered it to end the Panthers’ bid.

This ‘n’ that: Newton hooked up with Ginn on a 45-yard pass on the second play of the second half after the Panthers deferred upon winning the opening coin toss. Three years ago, Ginn had one target and no receptions for the 49ers’ in their Super Bowl XLVII loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Ginn head into the fourth with four catches for 74 yards. . . Receiver Jerricho Cotchery had an opportunity to put the Panthers in position for their second touchdown, but he was unable to hold onto Newton’s deep pass along the right sideline against the tight coverage of Denver linebacker Von Miller. . . Kicker Graham Gano’s 44-yard field goal attempt clanked off the right upright. . . Manning connected on passes to Emmanuel Sanders for gains of 25 and 22 yards to set up Brandon McManus’ third field goal of the game, this one from 30 yards for a 16-7 lead.
