If Michael Sam makes an NFL roster this season he will become the first openly gay player in league history.

In an ESPN interview Sunday night, Michele Steele asked 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick if Sam will need even more courage to operate effectively in an NFL locker room.

“I don't think so," Kaepernick said. "I think when he steps into that locker room everyone’s going to know that he’s there to help us win games.

"And that’s why you’re in the NFL, to help us win games. No one cares if you’re black, white, straight, gay, Christian, Jewish, whatever it may be.”

Steele then asked if Sam would be welcome on the 49ers.

His response: "Yes."
