BERKELEY -- After six seasons as the California Golden Bears head women's basketball coach, Joanne Boyle has stepped down to accept the head coaching job for the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC.

During her tenure at Cal, Boyle amassed a 137-64 record with the highest winning percentage (.681) of any coach in the program's history. The 2007-08 Russell AthleticWBCA Region 8 Coach of the Year led her teams to four consecutive NCAA Tournament berths (2006-09), including the program's first Sweet 16 appearance in 2009.

Boyle's 2009-10 and 2010-11 teams both qualified for the Women's National Invitation Tournament with the 2010 squad being crowned WNIT champions. She had four 20-win seasons in her six years at Cal, including twice winning a school-record 27 games. She was
named 2006-07 Pac-10 Coach of the Year in her second year with the program.

Prior to her arrival at Cal, Boyle served as head coach at Richmond for three seasons and spent nine years in the ACC as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Duke.

"We are grateful for Joanne's efforts at Cal the last six years," Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour said. "She elevated our women's basketball program to an elite level and built a foundation for sustained success. Our commitment to women's basketball is of the utmost priority, and I am convinced that the qualities of Cal and Cal Athletics will attract an
excellent pool of candidates."

Barbour indicated that a national search for a new coach would begin immediately. She did not state a specific timetable for the hiring.
