DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- California's Michael Morrison won the national title in the decathlon at Friday's NCAA Outdoor championships, which were pushed back a day because of heavy storms.
Morrison pulled ahead of Clemson's Miller Moss with a throw of 198 feet, 4 inches in the javelin and won with 8,118 points.
Duke's Curtis Beach ran the world's second-fastest heptathlon time in the final event, the 1,500 meters, and finished just 34 points behind Morrison.

Moss finished third with 7,996 points.
The athletes were nearly finished with the javelin late Thursday when heavy rain and the threat of lightning forced a delay. Officials reopened Drake Stadium a short time later, but another band of storms blew through Des Moines and forced them to postpone the finale of the decathlon, long jump and the semifinals of the 1,600-meter relays.
