A's second baseman Mark Ellis will begin his rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats on Saturday, manager Bob Melvin announced after the A's 8-4 win over the Royals.

Ellis was placed on the disabled list back on June 7 with a right hamstring strain.
REWIND: A's place Anderson, Ellis on DL, call up Weeks

A's prospect Jemile Weeks was called up to spell the veteran Ellis, but Weeks has provided Bob Melvin's team such a spark that there is no guarantee he will cede the starting job when Ellis returns.

The A's have not verbalized their plans yet.

Ellis is eligible to come off the disabled list on Wednesday, June 22.
