A's second baseman Mark Ellis made his first rehab start for the Sacramento River Cats Saturday, playing eight innings of second base and making three plate appearances. He is recovering from a strained right hamstring that landed him on the DL on June 7.
REWIND: Ellis to start rehab Saturday

Ellis went 0-for-3 from the plate before being pinch-hit for in the eighth inning in the River Cats' 3-0 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies.

A's manager Bob Melvin said Friday that Ellis would play three games for the River Cats.

Ellis is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list this coming Wednesday, but it is unclear what the A's will do at second base when he returns.

Ellis' replacement Jemile Weeks has turned heads with his electric style of play.
