SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The San Francisco Giants and infielder Freddy Sanchez have reached an extension on a one-year contract for the 2012 season, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.

The 33-year-old Sanchez is in his 10th Major League season, his third with San Francisco. The three-time All-Star batted .292 (126-for-431) with 22 doubles, seven home runs and 47 RBI in his first full season with the Giants last year. He was particularly impressive with the glove, posting a .991 fielding pct. (4 errors, 458tc), which was third-best among National League second basemen, behind David Eckstein (1.000) and Brandon Phillips (.996).
In his first career postseason last year, he batted .254 (16-for-63) with four doubles and three RBI in 15 games to help the Giants win their first World Series title in San Francisco history. His four hits in Game 1 of the World Series vs. Texas, tied a franchise record and he became the first player in Major League history with three doubles in his first three World Series at-bats.
Sanchez, who won the 2006 NL batting title, is a lifetime .298 hitter in 845 games with Boston (2002-03), Pittsburgh (2004-09) and San Francisco (2009-2011).
