SAN FRANCISCO -- The frequently changing plan for infielder Mike Fontenot changed again Friday when the Giants activated him from the 15-day disabled list to replace second baseman Bill Hall on the roster.Hall, who was spiked in the left shin during Thursday win over the visiting Padres and required seven stitches to close a gash that cut to the bone, was placed on the 15-day DL himself.Fontenot, who has been on the DL with a groin strain since May 26 and suffered a setback during his minor-league rehab stint June 10, went 1-for-4 for the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies on Thursday. On Wednesday, Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the media that Fontenot was likely to be expected to re-join the team for Fridays opener of a three-game series against the visiting Mets.On Thursday, after Fontenot went 0-for-4 with the Grizzlies on Wednesday night, Bochy said Fontenot was in a holding pattern in regards to returning by the weekend for health reasons, suggesting the groin wasnt 100 percent.Halls injury, however, prompted the need for another infielder, so Fontenot was summoned to AT&T Park, where Miguel Tejada was penciled in as the starting second baseman for the series opener against New York.
