Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area
On this week's show we go Inside Cal-Hi Sports with one of the Bay Area's very best softball pitchers Johanna Grauer. Johanna is a stand-out player for the Amador Valley Dons and took the softball world by storm last year as a sophomore. Johanna was not only Cal-Hi's Spring North Coast Section Player Of The Year, but Grauer received numerous other honors. Last year, Johanna committed to one of the best softball programs in the nation, Arizona State. Grauer is averging two strikeouts an inning and has only given up five runs in Amador's 16 games so far this season. Due to the large amount of success Johanna is experiencing, this past summer Johanna tried out for her mom's home land softball team, Sweden. Johanna made the team and will play for Sweden this summer.
After finding out about Johanna's decision to play overseas, we decided to do a story on her early years of domination and her excitement of playing internationally. It was obvious at practice that the entire team practiced hard but loved to joke around and laugh throughout their time out on the field. I decided to try and hit off of Johanna and that might have been where most of the laughs came from throughout the practice. With the entire Amador team cheering me on in the background, I put on a helmet, elbow pad and some gloves in an attempt to hit of Johanna. Needless to say, I had NO success and did not even come close to hitting the ball. When I asked Johanna's head coach Teresa Borchard, what makes Johanna such a good pitcher she laughed and explained that Grauer not only has speed but seven different types of pitches. Borchard also pointed out that Johanna does not fold under pressure and can handle all emotions during a game. It's hard to believe Johanna is only a junior and still has one more year of high school softball. The entire Amador Valley team has big goals to end the season and wants nothing more than to win a North Coast Section title. As for Johanna, she has an exciting couple of months ahead of her, and will head to Sweden in June.
