Jake Shields needed a MMA version of a Hail Mary in the last minute of his fight with Hector Lombard at UFC 171 in Dallas, and it was nearly answered. Nearly.

Lombard won via unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28. CSNBayArea.com scored the fight 30-27 for Lombard.

For the first 14 minutes of their welterweight fight, Lombard, a former judo Olympian, dominated the San Francisco-based Shields on the feet and on the ground, but with time winding down in the third and final round, Shields caught Lombard with a guillotine choke, but was unable to Lombard to tap out.

In a stylistic clash between striker and wrestler, Shields was unable to take down the seemingly stronger and quicker Lombard, while also being taken down at will by the Cuban. Lombard was 100% on his takedown attempts.

The loss snaps Shields four-fight unbeaten streak and drops him to 29-7-1 with one no contest, while Lombard improves to  34-4-1 with one no contest.

Johny Hendricks defeated Robbie Lawler via unanimous decision to win the vacant UFC welterweight championship in the main event.
