Dec. 22, 2010

In the spirit of the holiday season, the SaberCats organization volunteered at the Second Harvest Food Bank, Wednesday, December 22. Players in attendance included AFL Defensive Player of the Year DL Gabe Nyenhuis, WRDB Mike Brown, FB Chad Cook and DB Mervin Brookins along with SaberCats staff. The SaberCats helped sort and package food for Second Harvest Food Bank and Brookins was more than happy to help, coming from a similar background himself. Its great giving back to those who are less fortunate. Having a somewhat similar background, it always feels good to give back, especially for those who support us in what we do. Second Harvest Food Bank serves nearly 250,000 people a month from Daly City to Gilroy, providing over 45.5 million pounds of nutritious food to low income families in need this past fiscal year (July 2009-June 2010). Second Harvest collaborates with a network of 326 partner non-profit agencies operating at more than 700 different food distribution sites. Their partner agencies include shelters pantries, soup kitchens, childrens programs, senior meal sites and residential programs. Manager of Marketing Communications, Poppy Pembroke was very thankful to the SaberCats for their help and knows it will go a long way towards accomplishing Second Harvests ultimate goal. It was great to have the SaberCats come out, a local team coming out to support the local cause of ending hunger. It just means a lot that they come out and do this for us.Second Harvest receives nearly 300,000 hours of service, which is the equivalent of 143 full-time employees working at the food bank. SaberCats WRDB Mike Brown enjoyed his time at Second Harvest and was proud to donate his time to help out those in need. It was a great time today with Second Harvest Food Bank. They are very hospitable and its always a great thing to get out into the community. The ArenaBowl XVI, XVIII and XXI champion San Jose SaberCats open the 2011 season against the defending ArenaBowl champion Spokane Shock on March 11 as they return to the Arena Football League for their 15th season starting in 2011. The SaberCats began play in 1995, playing their home games at HP Pavilion.
