Free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria "re-engaged" in contract talks with the Giants on Monday night, but the team is not optimistic about retaining the 2010 World Series MVP because he is said to be weighing multiple offers from other teams, CSNBayArea.com learned early Tuesday morning from a major league source.

Renteria, 35, recently concluded a 2-year 18.5 million contract with the Giants, who are said to offer Renteria a one year, 1 million contract for 2011 to serve as recently acquired Miguel Tejada's backup.

The Giants' offer has long been on the table, but talks recently shut down when Renteria told ESPNDeportes.com that the offer was "disrespectful," and suggested he'd rather stay home with his family than play for 1 million.

Shortly thereafter, Renteria's agent reached out to the Giants and suggested that his client's comments had been mischaracterized, but prior to Monday evening, there had been no real contact between the sides since those comments.Renteria hit .276 in 72 games for the the Giants in 2010, but exploded in the World Series for San Francisco when he hit .412 with two homers and six RBI, garnering MVP honors.A report surfaced last week that Renteria was also being considered by the Reds.
