Brandon McCarthy is the A's second-highest ranked free agent entering the offseason, but if a report from the Chicago Sun-Times is accurate, Oakland already has competition in signing him.
The Chicago Cubs are interested in the seven-year veteran.
From the Chicago Sun-Times:
"With starting pitching the Cubs primary focus again this winter, they already have expressed interest in Athletics right-hander Brandon McCarthy, who was having a good season until suffering a skull fracture when hit by a line drive in September. He underwent surgery and didnt pitch again this season but appears to be healthy enough for a comeback effort in 2013."McCarthy, 29, was effective for the A's when he was healthy. He started 18 games in 2012, going 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA. But his chronically bad shoulder forced him to the disabled list multiple times before a line drive to his head ended his season on Sept. 5.
