OAKLAND – Left fielder Yoenis Cespedes is out of the A’s lineup Monday because of a bruised right heel, but manager Bob Melvin said Cespedes showed improvement from Sunday.

The heel has bothered Cespedes off and on for some time, and it acted up enough for him to leave Sunday’s game against Houston after six innings. Cespedes had started all of Oakland’s 18 games prior to Monday, the only other Athletic besides Josh Donaldson to do so.

“He’s gone back and forth with it,” Melvin said Monday afternoon. “Some days it bothers him, some days it doesn’t. It hasn’t for several days, then it popped up again. I feel like I’m best served to give him a day.”

Melvin said he considered Cespedes an option off the bench Monday as the A’s open a three-game series against the Texas Rangers.
