OAKLAND – Josh Donaldson is enjoying a very big lead in American League All-Star voting at third base, as he tries to become the A’s first fan-voted All-Star starter since Jason Giambi in 2000.

In results released Monday afternoon, Donaldson (1,953,423 votes) led Texas’ Adrian Beltre (953,318) by roughly one million votes, with Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria third at 904,638.

The most surprising development in the past week is the push that Yoenis Cespedes has made in outfield voting, no doubt boosted by the exposure he got from his two jaw-dropping throws to nail runners against the Angels last week. Cespedes jumped from sixth to fourth in votes, with 1,111,613. He currently trails Toronto’s Melky Cabrera by 342,915 votes for the third and final starting spot. Fan voting continues through July 3.

Derek Norris ranks third among A.L. catchers at 1,072,827 votes, Brandon Moss is fifth at designated hitter (646,456) and Jed Lowrie (523,677) is fifth at shortstop.
