OAKLAND -- A's outfielder Yoenis Cespedes received a cortisone injection in his right shoulder following Wednesday's loss to the Angels.
[RECAP: Angels 5, A's 4]
Manager Bob Melvin said it is not believed to be serious. The Home Run Derby champion could return to the lineup as early as Friday, though he may serve as the designated hitter for a few games before he resumes his defensive responsibilities.
"We want him in the outfield," Melvin said. "This gives us a better chance to get him in the outfield sooner rather than later."
Cespedes, who served as the designated hitter for the A's past four games, was on the field to stretch and shag batting practice with his team before Thursday's game, but he won't throw or swing.
"It was at its worst three days ago," said Melvin, who had cortisone shots in his shoulder, elbow and back during his playing days. "But he feels good. It could potentially be a one-day thing."
Cespedes, 27, is batting .243 with 24 home runs and 76 RBI through 129 games of his sophomore campaign.
With 10 games remaining, the A's magic number to clinch to division is down to five, and they want their cleanup-hitting left fielder to be ready to play full-tilt when the postseason rolls around. Brandon Moss, who has a career-high 27 home runs this year, will bat fourth Thursday, with Josh Reddick and Seth Smith sliding in to comprise the heart of the order for the series opener against Minnesota.
