ARLINGTON, Texas – Right-hander Jarrod Parker was scratched from Sunday’s start against Texas due to illness, and he wasn’t the only last-minute deletion.
Yoenis Cespedes also was scratched for the series finale because of right shoulder soreness, the team announced.
Lefty Tommy Milone will start on the mound in Parker’s place. Nate Freiman replaced Yoenis Cespedes at designated hitter. The changes throw a twist into the A’s efforts to complete a three-game sweep over their closest competition in the American League West.
Cespedes reportedly hurt his throwing shoulder while diving for a ball in the outfield on the last homestand, though it isn’t known at one point that might have happened. Cespedes made a strong throw to third base in Friday night’s win at Texas to nail Alex Rios.
However, Cespedes served as designated hitter Saturday and was penciled in at DH again Sunday, an indication the A’s were trying to prevent Cespedes from having to throw the ball.
An A’s spokesman revealed nothing more about Parker except that he was suffering an illness.
Outfielder Michael Choice was hit with food poisoning Saturday. It isn’t known if Parker might have the same thing or a different kind of bug.
Milone has served as a reliever since being recalled from the minors Sept. 3, but he’s made 24 starts for Oakland this year. He is 0-4 with a 5.67 ERA in five career starts against the Rangers.
The A’s new batting order is as follows: Crisp CF, Young LF, Lowrie SS, Donaldson 3B, Norris C, Callaspo 2B, Freiman DH, Reddick RF, Barton 1B.
