SEATTLE – The A’s designated Sam Fuld for assignment Saturday to clear a roster spot for fellow outfielder Craig Gentry, who was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list.
The team now has 10 days to either trade Fuld, release him or send him to the minors, which is unlikely because he must clear waivers first, meaning another team can claim him. It’s a tough demotion from the standpoint that Fuld has been a very productive player for Oakland through the first 10 games, more so than his .200 average would reflect.
He was a spark plug, making several standout plays in the outfield and adding one home run and two triples. He had cooled off recently, going just 2 for 17 over his past four contests. It would seem Fuld would generate interest from clubs searching for outfield help.
Gentry has been sidelined since early in spring training with a strained lower back. He went 6 for 12 with four RBI in a rehab assignment split between Single-A Stockton and Triple-A Sacramento.
In other news, Coco Crisp is batting leadoff and playing center field Saturday against Seattle. Crisp hadn’t started any of the previous four games because of a left wrist injury.
