A’s manager Bob Melvin confirmed that Drew Pomeranz will be called up from the minors to start Wednesday at Houston, allowing Oakland to set up its top four starters to pitch in a weekend series at Anaheim.

With Pomeranz going Wednesday, Sonny Gray will be pushed back a day to pitch Thursday against the Angels, with Jon Lester, Scott Kazmir and Jeff Samardzija to follow in the four-game series.

Pomeranz, 25, began the season as the A’s long reliever before moving into the rotation, where he went 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA in eight starts. But he landed on the disabled list after punching a chair in frustration and breaking his right hand following a rough start against Texas on June 16. He was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento after he recovered and has gone 3-1 with a 3.69 ERA in eight starts for the River Cats.

Samardzija takes the mound in Monday night’s series opener against the Astros, with Jason Hammel going Tuesday.
