A's head to Japan, wary of jet lag

The A's flew to Japan Thursday, making their second trip to the country for an Opening Day abroad in the last five seasons.

Oakland's 2012 season officially starts with home games (in Japan) against the Seattle Mariners next Wednesday and Thursday. With the 16-hour time difference, the 7:10 p.m. first pitch in Tokyo will occur at 3:10 a.m. in Oakland.

Wary of what the time difference might do to the players' performance, the A's have consulted sleep specialists to establish a gameplan to combat the jet lag, according to a report by the San Jose Mercury News. After compiling information from the experts, the team is encouraging players to get six to seven hours of sleep on the 12-hour flight.
