EXTRA BAGGS: Melky beats Willie Mays to century club, etc.

ANAHEIMHo hum. Yawn.

Melky Cabrera broke another of Willie Mays longstanding SanFrancisco Giants records. He became the fastest to 100 hits, hitting a singleand a double to reach the century mark in 291 plate appearances Tuesday night.

Mays did it in 295 plate appearances in 1958, the Giantsinaugural season on the West Coast.

We jest, of course. There is nothing tedious or tiresomeabout breaking a record established by the games greatest all-around player --especially the way Cabrera is getting it done.

He got his 101st hit later in the game, too.

Really, Im out ofsuperlatives, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. The guy, hes been a machinefor us. You look at the storied franchise we are, the Giants, and here we areand hes breaking another record.

The Giants alreadyhave one machine in their storied history. I am not sure they need another likethe first one.

Cabrera was supposedto DH in Wednesdays series finale, but hes going to play the field. Bochyplans to get Nate Schierholtz in the lineup against right-hander Jered Weaver;he wasnt sure of his plans at DH yet.

Writing about the "fastest player to 100 hits" reminds me of the time I covered Darin Erstad and the Angels in 2000. He reached the century mark in 61 games. That was the second fastest in history, just one game more than Heinie Manush of the 1934 Washington Senators.

I remember how we crowded around Erstad to tell him the news. I have an even better recollection of his reaction.

He wrinkled up his face and said, "Who the heck is Heinie Manush?"

Cabrera got his 100th hit in the Giants' 69th game, by the way.

Barry Zito wasineffective while getting tagged for eight earned runs in the 12-5 loss, buthis linescore could have been neater if Angel Pagan had been able to make aplay on Mark Trumbos bases-loaded triple off George Kontos. The hit depositedthree more runs into Zitos ERA bank.

Trumbo tossed hisbat and admired the shot, clearly thinking it was gone. It wasnt. Paganappeared to stutter-step near the wall, unsure of where it was. But he wasntable to time his jump, and the ball nicked off his glove.

I just thought Ihad a little more space to make a nice jump, Pagan said. My leg hit the walland everything moved so I couldnt make the grab. I just didnt make it. Noexcuses. I did everything I could.

You wonder how thegame wouldve turned out if Pagan had managed to hang on. The Angels stillwouldve scored a run on the sacrifice fly, but three others probably wouldnthave crossed the plate.

Prior to the game, I asked Bochy about Buster Poseys swipetag on Maicer Izturis at the plate Monday night. It was exactly the motion thatBochy and bullpen catcher Bill Hayes worked with Posey to learn this spring inorder to avoid contact with the runner.

Bochy agreed that he liked Poseys positioning. But he wantsto work on it some more.

He hasnt had a lot of plays, and to be honest, we shouldget out and work on it occasionally, Bochy said. Hes looked comfortable.Hes keeping himself in a good position. But its not a bad idea to do it everyonce in awhile to keep it fresh in your mind.

The Giants might make a roster move prior to Wednesdaysgame. Kontos is leaving the club to attend his grandfathers funeral in theChicago area. He wouldnt have been available to pitch anyway after throwing 223 innings Tuesday night.

If the Giants place him on the bereavement list, he wouldhave to miss a minimum of three days. That would mean being without him Fridayat Oakland. But hell travel back on Thursdays day off. So club officials wereweighing the issue.

If they call up a reliever to replace him, itll be someoneon the 40-man roster because the Giants do not have a vacancy. Steve Edlefsenand Dan Otero are the choices.

If the Giants ever get in a roster bind, they could alwaystransfer Freddy Sanchez to the 60-day DL.

Another guy on the DL is left-hander Dan Runzler, who iscontinuing his rehab work in the minor leagues. Hes expected to graduate fromSingle-A San Jose to Triple-A Fresno soon.

Runzler had an interesting situation last week as he warmedup to enter a game. He took the mound and was announced before umpires realizedhe hadnt been listed on San Joses lineup card.

The ump was willing tooverlook it. But Modestos manager wasnt. It was Lenn Sakata, who managed inthe Giants system from 1999-2007 and won Cal League titles with San Jose in2001, 05 and 07. He left the Giants when he became frustrated that theydidnt promote him.

So Runzler wasnt going to get any favors that night.
