Northern California native Kevin Frandsen, who went to Bellarmine and SJSU before the Giants drafted him in 2004, has been called up to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Frandsen, 30, was called up to take the roster spot of third baseman Placido Polanco, who was placed on the disabled list with back inflammation Thursday.

In 418 plate appearances with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Frandsen put together a slash line of .302.337.396.

Frandsen was suspended for 50 games during the 2011 season for violating baseball's drug policy for unprescribed ritalin.

Over four years with the Giants, from 2006 to 2009, Frandsen hit .243 with seven home runs and 53 RBIs.
