Giants will wait to make DL call on Sandoval

SAN FRANCISCO -- An MRI exam confirmed that Pablo Sandoval sustained a strained left hamstring Tuesday night, but the club will wait until Friday to determine whether the injury warrants a trip to the 15-day disabled list.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sandoval would get aggressive treatment on Wednesday and again when the team has a scheduled day off on Thursday. He indicated that if trainers believe Sandoval will be out a week or less, the club could play short so they can have his services available to them again as soon as possible. Sandoval is one of few power threats in the lineup and had just begun to have better at-bats with runners on base.

Bochy also mentioned the possibility that if Sandoval does have to be placed on the DL, the corresponding move could be to activate first baseman Aubrey Huff. Bochy said Huff's knee tendinitis has subsided; club officials would have to decide on Friday whether to activate him or have him resume his minor league rehab assignment.

In other news, Hector Sanchez is scheduled to catch five innings for Triple-A Fresno on Thursday. Sanchez's knee responded well in catching and fielding drills, including ground balls at first base. He's expected to be ready when eligible to be activated Aug. 2.
