Sandoval to rehab with San Jose on Friday

ST. LOUIS -- Pablo Sandoval will rejoin Single-A San Jose on a rehab assignment Friday night, when he'll test his strained hamstring with five innings at third base.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sandoval "more than likely would play two of three games down there" before rejoining the active roster. It would appear the Giants are targeting Monday's series opener against the Washington Nationals for Sandoval's return.

Sandoval injured himself while stretching for a throw at first base July 24. He was eligible to come off the DL on Thursday and has done well in running drills.

Earlier this season, the Giants had to play 35 games without Sandoval after he fractured a hamate bone in his right hand May 1. They have posted a 27-23 record during his two stints on the disabled list.

His bat should come in handy against the Nationals, who swept the Giants July 3-5 at Washington.
