Roy spurns Warriors, will sign with Timberwolves

Brandon Roy will notbe signing with the Golden State Warriors. Instead, he will be making hiscomeback for the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to the Oregonian.That report has beenconfirmed by CSNBayarea.com.Roy, 27, retired inDecember 2011, after experiencing chronic knee pain, but he announced he wasmaking a comeback in June.Warriors generalmanager Bob Myers indicated at that time he would reach out to Roy. Beforejoining the Warriors front office in April 2011, Myers was an agent and Roywas his client.Myers met with Royon Sunday, and confirmed the following day that he had a second meeting set up.It is unknown if that second meeting took place. The earliest Roy can sign acontract with the Timberwolves is July 11.Roy's contract is reported to be for 10 million over two years. The Warriors could have offered Roy that same contract -- using their mid-level exception -- and even offered more years and more money. But earlier this week, Myers made it clear that the Warriors were not prepared to use the team's entire mid-level exception because it would put the Warriors in the luxury tax area.The Warriorspursuit of Roy made sense from a basketball standpoint. Roy was a three-timeall-star before injuries cut short his career. If he can approach his formerlevel of play, Roy will no doubt help the team hes playing for.With Stephen Currycoming off a season of ankle injuries and Klay Thompson entering just hissecond season, the versatile Roy would have given the Warriors an experiencedand competent third guard.
