SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants made a pair of roster moves following their oddity of a 2-1 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday night.
The club activated catcher Hector Sanchez from the 15-day disabled list; Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez would start Thursday's homestand finale and catch Barry Zito, with whom he's formed a battery for all but two of the left-hander's starts this season.
The club optioned Eli Whiteside to Triple-A Fresno.
In addition, the Giants sought to cover a tired bullpen. They reinstated right-hander Shane Loux from his rehab assignment and activated him from the 15-day disabled list. To create room, outfielder Justin Christian was optioned to Fresno.
Loux has been on the DL since late June with a strained neck but the injury hasn't been an issue for several weeks. Sanchez sprained his knee last month in Atlanta but it responded well while catching the past couple days at Fresno.
The Giants needed work Wednesday night from Brad Penny, George Kontos and Clay Hensley -- all of whom loaded the bases yet somehow escaped without allowing a run. They had been worked hard in recent days and each logged a ton of pitches in Wednesday's wild loss.
