SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Giants’ long list of World Baseball Classic participants was whittled down by two on Thursday, as outfielder Andres Torres and left-hander Jose Mijares came down with injuries that will knock them out of the international tournament.

Torres underwent an MRI exam that showed a strained oblique and he’s expected to be held out of action for at least a week. Mijares also was sidelined after complaining of elbow tenderness while he allowed two runs in an inning Thursday at Tempe.

Torres was scheduled to leave on Saturday along with outfielder Angel Pagan to join Team Puerto Rico in Miami. Mijares was on Venezuela’s provisional roster. Along with left-hander Javier Lopez, who took himself off Puerto Rico’s roster even before bruising his left hand, the Giants’ list of WBC participants has gone from 11 to eight.

Torres said he felt mild oblique soreness earlier this spring and had gone several days without hitting from the left side. He aggravated the injury while batting left-handed Thursday.

Torres is expected to form the right-handed portion of a platoon in left field, with Gregor Blanco. With exactly a month until opening day, he has plenty of time to heal up and be ready.

In other injury news, right-hander Ryan Sadowski’s comeback bid hit a bump when he came down with elbow soreness after a sparkling first outing. Sadowski, who pitched in Korea the last two years, was expected to be reassigned to minor league camp where he could continue his rehab work. Also scheduled to be reassigned was right-hander Mason Tobin, who continues to work his way back from a second Tommy John surgery.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy penned a reasonable facsimile of his expected opening-day lineup for Thursday’s exhibition against the Mariners: CF Pagan, 2B Scutaro, 3B Sandoval, C Posey, RF Pence, 1B Belt, LF Blanco, SS Crawford, DH H Sanchez, and Matt Cain on the mound.

It’s the last home game before Pagan, Sandoval and Scutaro leave for the WBC, so perhaps Bochy just wanted to get a look at the group together before some of them leave town for as much as three weeks.
