ST. LOUIS – The Giants might have interrupted their funk and salvaged a victory in the Bay Bridge series on Thursday, but they lost their leading RBI man in the process.
Third baseman Pablo Sandoval is expected to miss the entire three-game weekend series here at Busch Stadium and could be out a week after an MRI exam showed a strained left foot.
Sandoval wasn’t sure when he sustained the injury, but it was painful enough for him to tell trainers in the eighth inning Thursday at AT&T Park.
Sandoval is not available off the bench, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. The club could decide to put Sandoval on the disabled list if the injury doesn’t improve in a few days, the manager added.
For now, Bochy opted to leave Buster Posey in the cleanup spot and elevate Hunter Pence from fifth to fill Sandoval’s No.3 spot. Bochy could change that alignment as well and move Posey up to third – especially if it becomes clear that Posey is getting pitched around.
Joaquin Arias, who is just 2 for 11 in limited exposure against right-handed pitchers, gets a start at third base against a tough one in rookie Shelby Miller. Another tough right-handed assignment looms Saturday with Adam Wainwright.
