Romo's knee passes test; Brad Penny nears return

SAN FRANCISCO -- Right-hander Sergio Romo threw off a bullpen mound and practiced covering first base to the satisfaction of Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who expects his lethal little slider slinger to be available out of the bullpen Friday night.

But Bochy said Romo's subluxated knee still had to be checked by doctors, who would provide the final clearance.

"He passed the tests, he's good to go," Bochy said of Romo, who is 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA and has held right-handers to a .164 average.

Romo declined comment when approached by reporters.

The Giants could have another right-handed option soon. Brad Penny, who was signed to a minor league contract in May, continues to throw batting practice at the club's minor league complex in Arizona and is nearing an assignment to Triple-A Fresno, Bochy said.

Penny and the Giants originally had an understanding on a May 31 target date to be added to the roster, but he required a little more time to get his arm in condition after he was granted a release May 8 from the Softbank Hawks. Penny made just one start for the Japanese League club.
