Trip on Oracle racing boat is a splash hit for Bochy

Trip on Oracle racing boat is a splash hit for Bochy

SAN FRANCISCO Long before the racing catamaran banked intoits first stomach-dropping, 45-degree turn, Giants manager Bruce Bochy came toa conclusion about his leisurely afternoon on the water.

Ive been on some sailing boats around the bay, he said. You werent going to have a glass of white wine on this one.

Bochy was a guest of the Oracle racing team as they prepareto defend their 2010 victory in the Americas Cup. He visited the warehousewhere they are assembling the 70-footer (that will have a mast over 20 storiestall). Then he strapped in for his hour-long trip on a 45-footer.

And yes, he strapped in.

Im not real nimble, Bochy said. The skipper said, Youwant to move around? You can if you want to. I said, Im fine right where Imat.

Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow went a day earlier. How comeno players ventured out for the day?

Well, Im expendable, Bochy said. They werent going tolet a player get on that boat.

Bochy had an appreciation for watching the crew at work. Heknows what its like to manage a roster of 25 people, all filling their rolesand playing their parts for a common goal.

What great teamwork. They cant make a mistake there,Bochy said. I think theyd all make good infielders. Theyre so nimble andthey have to all be in unison or it wont work.

It was quite an experience, quite an adrenaline rush. Itsneat to see how much effort they put into it for a trophy.

Bochy played a part, too. A boat needs ballast, right?

And they had a helmet that fit me, said Bochy, whofamously wears a size 8 18 cap. They told me I needed to wear one. I said,We might have a problem here.

When I passed along that quote on Twitter, former bigleaguer Greg Cadaret replied with a classic line:

That wasnt a helmet. It was the bailing bucket!

The Cubs announced on Friday that actor and comedian Bill Murray, who has been a staple at Cubs games this postseason, will conduct the 7th inning stretch during Game 3.

This won't be Murray's first rodeo singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" at Wrigley Field.
