The likelihood that A's closer Andrew Bailey will be traded increased a bit Thursday with a report by ESPN.com that the Red Sox were interested in making a deal for the right-hander.
ESPN.com's Buster Olney published the following on Twitter early in the day: "The Red Sox landed Mark Melancon, but they are continuing their pursuit of other relievers, including Andrew Bailey."
A published report out of Boston indicated that A's GM Billy Beane met with the Red Sox during last week's Winter Meetings in Dallas.

Bailey missed two months of the 2011 season wtih a forearm strain and elbow inflammation but the 2009 AL Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star still finished with 24 saves, including converting his final 15 opportunities.
If it happens, it wouldnt be too much of a shock, Bailey said. Coming up in this organization, you understand were a small-market team. Billy Beane and company build from within and trade guys when theyre approaching arbitration years and free agency.
But no matter if Im in Oakland or Boston, Im going to get ready for the season in the same way. Whatever happens, its just nice to know that youre wanted.
Bailey is from New Jersey but spends his offseasons in New England. He lives outside of New Haven, Conn., where his wife grew up.

He has 75 saves and a 2.07 ERA over the past three seasons. He is scheduled to earn465,000 this year.
