I don't see [Colon] a whole lot during the day anyway. He just does his thing, he's done it for a while, and he's good at it.
—Bob Melvin on Bartolo Colon

Programming note: Coverage of A's-Astros begins at 3:30 with A's Pregame Live on CSN California.

The Moss family is expecting their second child, but the baby decided to stay in utero for a while longer, allowing dad to rejoin the team. Moss will be batting sixth and playing first base.

River Cats first baseman and outfielder Shane Peterson flew to Houston on Friday and spent the day with the A's, in case he was needed to fill in for Moss. He flew home after the game with Dan Straily, who was optioned to Sacramento to make room for Bartolo Colon.

Colon, as previously reported here, will be starting against the Astros and slotted into the fifth spot in the rotation. His return allows Oakland to get an extra day of rest for Brett Anderson, and two extra days of rest for Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone, and A.J. Griffin, since the team is off on Monday.

Colon takes relief pitcher Will Harris' spot on the 40-man roster. Harris was claimed by the Diamondbacks. Harris was on Oakland's roster for three days.

Colon topped out at 94 MPH against the Giants in his last outing of the exhibition season. That's a sign that he will be effective on the mound. He has a simple approach on the mound. The 39-year-old veteran threw his fastball 89.2 percent of the time last season.

Colon rejoins the team and won't need much prep time before he takes the mound.

"I don't see [Colon] a whole lot during the day anyway," A's manager Bob Melvin said on Friday. "He just does his thing, he's done it for a while, and he's good at it."

Coco Crisp is starting in his customary leadoff spot and playing center field. He said that his back was sore after making a diving attempt in the first inning of Friday's game. He remained in the game after tweaking his back and went 3 for 5 with a home run, two doubles and and three RBI. The skipper says he'll keep an eye on him, but he's OK.

"He knows that we have some other options here and you don't want to go out there if you're going to be hampered," Melvin said.  "He feels good enough to play."

A's lineup:

Coco Crisp, CF
Jed Lowrie, SS
Josh Reddick, RF
Yoenis Cespedes, LF
Seth Smith, DH
Brandon Moss, 1B
Josh Donaldson, 3B
Derek Norris, C
Eric Sogard, 2B
