Sandoval, Posey make early highlights in first workout

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Pablo Sandoval couldn't swing right-handed last September. He has no issues now.

Sandoval's mammoth show in batting practice is the highlight so far as the Giants are continuing their first full-squad workout of the spring. And yes, it included a couple of deep drives from the right side.

The switch hitter's tender shoulder no longer appears to be an issue. Last year, he had to sit against lefties down the stretch. He tried batting left-handed against lefty pitchers, but those four plate appearances weren't pretty. (He was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a sacrifice.) Sandoval didn't swing right-handed when he accompanied Giants manager Bruce Bochy on an All-Star team that played a few games in Taiwan in November.

Sandoval hit a flurry of shots from both sides of the plate, winning applause from the 200 or so spectators who came to Scottsdale Stadium. It's evident that Sandoval has done plenty of cage work over the winter; the previous offseason, he didn't touch a bat for two months while he focused on his conditioning program.

In other news, Buster Posey worked out at first base along with Aubrey Huff, Brandon Belt and Brett Pill while the Giants practiced infield drills and pickoff plays. Bochy had said Posey would concentrate on catching early in camp. But it's clear that Posey will be kept busy at both positions all spring.

Brandon Crawford also had an impressive round of batting practice, launching at least six home runs. New Giants Angel Pagan and Melky Cabrera also hit already; both appear to have arrived in good shape.
