ST. PAUL Head coach Todd McLellan left the Sharks-Wild game early in the second period after getting struck in the head by an errant stick.Just after the Wild tied the game at 2-2, Jamie McGinn and Marco Scandella came together along the boards in front of the Sharks bench. According to the Sharks, Scandellas stick tomahawked McLellan in the head.Soon after, officials stopped play to attend to McLellan on the Sharks bench after he appeared to collapse. He was helped to to the locker room, although was able to walk there generally on his own volition.
Assistant coach Matt Shaw didn't see McLellan get hit, but explained what happened afterwards.I saw Scandella come into the boards and I saw our guys kind of push him out," Shaw said. "Then I looked and Todd was trying to compose himself and stay upright, and you could tell he was in some discomfort. I just kind of grabbed him.
Scandella said: I could tell I hit something pretty hard, but I didnt know what it was.
McLellan was alert and attentive while being attended to by doctors, and watched the remainder of the 4-3 loss from the visiting coach's office at the Xcel Energy Center. He returned with the team on its flight home to San Jose, but did not meet with the media.
