SAN JOSE – Sharks head coach Todd McLellan offered a somewhat more detailed, yet still extremely vague update on injured defenseman Brent Burns on Friday. Burns, who had an offseason sports hernia/groin surgery, has yet to skate during training camp.

Here’s a cut-and-paste of McLellan’s Q-and-A with the local media regarding Burns following Sharks practice.

McLellan: “I don’t have an idea on timeline. I really don’t. Obviously, the sooner the better. I think we’ll see him start skating quite quickly, and then we’ve just got to get him up to speed. It will be a day-to-day thing for awhile.”

Q: So you’re not saying in your head ‘I don’t have him for the next three weeks?’ You haven’t reached that kind of conclusion?

McLellan: “No, I haven’t reached that conclusion. I know I didn’t have him today and I know we don’t have him tomorrow. That I know. He likely won’t play in game one, but we’ll see what happens in game two and on.”

Q: What can you tell us about the injury itself?

McLellan: “Nothing.”

Q: You do expect him to start skating, though?

McLellan: “At some point soon, as he feels a little bit better here, I think he’ll be skating. He did skate coming into camp, and needed a little bit of time. When he gets back on the ice, we’ve got a lot of work to do to catch him up even more. But, he’ll be prepared to do it.”

Q: Is it a case where he should have stayed off the ice before camp?

McLellan: “I don’t think so. He took care of himself, and he was out there trying to get himself ready. I don’t think that was the case at all.”

Q: Are Burns and Jason Demers going on the road trip to Calgary/Edmonton?

McLellan: “I believe so, yeah.”

Q: Can you talk about what his absence means?

McLellan: “He’s a hell of a defenseman. He’s [6’5’’], he’s got size, tremendous shot, he can skate and play a lot of minutes. It’s a big hole, but we knew [injuries were] going to happen at some point during the year. Maybe ours is coming early, other team will have it late. It’s about playing hard and getting through it.

“Matt Irwin has looked very good. Nick Petrecki has come in and played well. They deserve to be here.”
