The Sharks placed goalie Antero Niittymaki on waivers Wednesday, according to a report from TSN Canada.

Niittymaki, who was recently sent to AHL minor-league affiliate Worcester for a second conditioning assignment, has not played for San Jose this season

The native of Finland had offseason hip surgery and started practice in December. Niittymaki had expressed frustration early this month at not taking the ice after being called up from his first conditioning assignment on Dec. 23.

"Obviously, yeah. What can I say? Obviously, I want to play, but it doesnt look like Im going to play any time soon," Niittymaki told CSNCalifornia.com on Jan. 9.

Niittymaki had a 12-7-3 record and a 2.72 GAA in 24 games for the Sharks last season.

Sharks backup netminder Thomas Greiss has only given up one goal in each of his last three starts.

Starter Antti Niemi has appeared in 37 games and has a 2.34 goals-against average.
