UPDATE (Tuesday, 2 p.m.) -- The 49ers officially announced the trade in a press release, acquiring QB Colt McCoy and an undisclosed 2013 draft pick in return for sending the Browns two undisclosed 2013 draft picks. McCoy passed a physical Tuesday in the Bay Area to finalize the deal.
“We are pleased to add another high-character player like Colt to our roster,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a young, competitive player who we are looking forward to working with.”
Quarterback Colt McCoy will join the 49ers’ competition with Scott Tolzien to serve as Colin Kaepernick’s backup.
The 49ers on Monday acquired McCoy, who turns 27 in September, in a trade with the Cleveland Browns for a late-round draft pick, a league source told CSNBayArea.com, confirming a report from CBSSports.com. The Browns announced the trade shortly before 3 p.m. (PT).
The 49ers send the Browns a seventh-round pick and a fifth-round selection (No. 164 overall) in exchange for the McCoy and Cleveland’s sixth-round selection (No. 173 overall), a league source told CSNBayArea.com. The 49ers now have 13 scheduled picks in the draft, which runs April 25-27.
McCoy made 21 starts for the Browns in 2010 and 2011 after the Browns selected him in the third round of the 2010 draft with the 85th overall pick. He was the Browns’ backup behind rookie Brandon Weedon last season. McCoy appeared in just three games last season, completing 9 of 17 pass attempts for 79 yards and one touchdown. He became expendable after the Browns signed veteran free agent Jason Campbell last week.
In 24 career games, McCoy has completed 58.3 percent of his passes with 21 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. His passer rating is 74.8. He has also rushed 93 times for 363 yards and one touchdown.
The 49ers are also expected to add a rookie to participate in the offseason program and training camp. McCoy enters the final year of his contract. He is scheduled to earn $1.5 million in base salary.
Tolzien served as the 49ers’ No. 3 quarterback in each of the past two seasons after the 49ers claimed him off waivers from the San Diego Chargers shortly before training camp in 2011. Tolzien has suited up for just three regular-season games and has yet to appear in a game.
On March 12, the 49ers officially traded backup Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for the No. 34 overall pick in this month’s draft, as well as a conditional third-round pick in 2014.
