This competition might never materialize because Boone has been given the first shot to replace Adam Snyder, whom the 49ers never attempted to re-sign as a free agent. Boone had an encouraging offseason in his attempt to make the transition from being the team's backup tackle on both sides. Boone is still learning the stance and technique of playing in such close quarters at the guard position. Kilgore, meanwhile, is looking like the 49ers' sixth offensive lineman. He spent much of his offseason working at center as Jonathan Goodwin's backup. Kilgore could put himself in position to take over as the starting center sooner than later. In any event, if Boone falters, Kilgore could get a long look at right guard. Rookie Joe Looney, who is rounding back into form after sustaining a foot injury at the Senior Bowl, has a lot of ground to make up if he wants to insert his name into the conversation.
