49ers camp summary (727): Crabtree hobbled

Share

Summary: Receiver Michael Crabtree came up hobbling with an apparent right ankle injury and sat out the final 20 minutes of the 49ers' first full-squad practice of training camp. Crabtree walked gingerly off the field and into the locker room at the conclusion of the 2-hour, 20-minute practice. He did not have his ankle wrapped. Crabtree has never played in an exhibition game in three previous seasons with the 49ers. He missed all of training camp as a rookie in a contract stalemate. The next year, he missed most of camp with a neck injury. Last year, he missed training camp after undergoing offseason foot surgery. Up to the point he came off the field, Crabtree had a good practice as the team's starting flanker opposite of Randy Moss.

Offensive plays of the day: There wasn't much from which to pick. But during one-on-one sessions, Moss caught two deep passes from Alex Smith against the coverage of second-string cornerback Tramaine Brock.

Defensive plays of the day: Cornerback Perrish Cox and safety C.J. Spillman both intercepted passes on throws intended for undrafted rookie tight end Garrett Celek. Cox recorded his interception on a Josh Johnson pass that deflected off Celek's hands. Spillman made his interception against Scott Tolzien, who overshot Celek on a deep seam route.

Injury report: The only players who did not participate in practice were guard Joe Looney (foot), outside linebacker Darius Fleming and running back Jewel Hampton, each of whom reported to camp with an injury.

Notable: Three players who came to the 49ers as defenders participated in Friday's practice on offense. Defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs played tight end, linebacker Michael Wilhoite saw action at fullback, and defensive back Ben Hannula ran routes as a wide receiver.

Rookie report: The best play from a rookie came courtesy of undrafted wide receiver Nathan Palmer, who stretched high to catch a pass across the middle from Johnson.

Next practice: The 49ers return to practice Saturday from 2:30 to 5:10 p.m. All practices in Santa Clara are closed to the general public due to the ongoing stadium construction.
