SAN FRANCISCO -- Running back Brandon Jacobs, who has been taking part in full practices for two weeks, was inactive once again with the 49ers getting prepared to take on his former team.Jacobs was inactive for the sixth consecutive game to begin the season. He sustained a left knee sprain on Aug. 18 in an exhibition game, and has been healthy now for a couple weeks.But the 49ers have decided once again to go with three running backs on their 46-man game-day roster. The 49ers' third running back is Anthony Dixon, who plays on most of the 49ers' special-teams units. Jacobs does not play special teams.Jacobs last week expressed frustration in comments to USA Today that he has not been active for a game despite being healthy for a couple of weeks. "I understand where coach is coming from, and coach understands me from him playing football and understanding the athlete and the competitive nature of wanting to get out and play to help the team win, not only that against his former team," Jacobs said on Thursday. "In this case, his former team is not important. What's important is for us in the long run."Jacobs played his first seven seasons for the Giants. He was released in the offseason, and the 49ers signed him to a one-year, 1.575 million contract.There is a 49ers number change for the game. Will Tukuafu, who has dual duty as a defensive tackle and fullback, is now wearing No. 48. This way, he does not have to report as an eligible receiver for offensive plays. He previously wore No. 92.
For the New York Giants, receiver Hakeem Nicks, who missed three games with a knee injury, is active for the game. Nicks is slated to start ahead of Domenik Hixon, who has started the past two games. Markus Kuhn will start at defensive tackle for Rocky Bernard.49ers inactives
