The NFL season kicks off Thursday night. Sure enough, 49ers guard Mike Iupati will have his TV tuned to a football game. And he won't be doing any channel-surfing, either. But Iupati will not be watching the Green Bay-New Orleans season-opening NFL game on NBC. His attention will be on another nationally televised game.Central Washington at Humboldt State? That's right, Iupati will be focused on the Green and Gold of Humboldt State, the only NCAA Division II football program that still remains in California."I'll be watching my brother, of course," Iupati said.Andrew Iupati (6-foot-1, 310 pounds) is a senior defensive tackle for Humboldt State. He wears No. 78. The Lumberjacks' game Thursday at 5 p.m. against Central Washington is available nationally on the CBS Sports Network. Andrew Iupati was recruited to Oregon after two years at Golden West Junior College. He transferred out of the Oregon program after one redshirt season when Chip Kelly replaced Mike Bellotti as coach. He started all 11 games last season for Humboldt, recording 46 tackles with four stops behind the line of scrimmage.Andrew Iupati spent a couple weeks this summer working out at San Jose State with his brother and some of the other 49ers during the NFL lockout."He's a good player," Mike Iupati said of his younger brother. "He works hard. He's hungry and wants to help out the team and get better. He's a defensive player. He always thinks he's better than me."He's strong. He's way stronger than me -- way stronger. Lower body and upper body, he's way stronger."
