The 49ers will face either the New Orleans Saints or the winner of the Atlanta-New York Giants game at Candlestick Park in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs on Jan. 14 at 1:30 p.m., the NFL announced Sunday night.
As the top seed in the playoffs, the Green Bay Packers will open their Super Bowl defense Sunday, Jan. 15, against the worst-remaining seed. Therefore, if the third-seeded Saints defeat the Detroit Lions on Saturday, the 49ers' first playoff game since 2002 will be against New Orleans. If Detroit beats New Orleans, the sixth-seeded Lions will then face the Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday, Jan. 15. The 49ers would then face the survivor of the other NFC wild-card weekend matchup between Atlanta and the Giants.
